Responsibility or license to abuse?

What is Freedom of speech? Well inshort it is the idea that you are free to think what you like and express your thoughts in words.

Being able to speak freely on first thought is such a positive thing. It allows your to be who you are and today this expression is done in a more widespread manner because of the existence of social media. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, WhatsApp and so many more. Any individual, you or me, can go log in and that is all you need to do. You can express yourself in any way however you want.

Its arguably the greatest convenience and also the cause the major problems today in our society. People easily make opinions and find platforms to showcase their opinions without any form of proper regulation. No one monitors if these opinions bothers someone else or hurts someone’s emotions. The internet has provided a permenant and interactive form of speech and opinion, something that was not imagined in human history. But maybe that’s why it’s still new to us to learn about this new way.

Cyberbullying has become a major problem. Just imagine being bullied in school but it doesn’t stop when you come home, it continues but this time online. suicide has become a problem in young adults. These should be the people who are dreaming of their future yet we see them wanting to end it. And if it’s not suicide there is depression, stunted social development, a need for retaliation.

We are better than this. If the freedom of speech is given to us we should have the sense and the knowledge to use it properly. Let our words not harm anyone else around us. We are better than this!
